A River Runs Through It…

As students become more connected, educators are finding the need to make shifts in their modes of delivery. Today’s students are accessing and processing information in new ways. These “digital natives” are comfortable in this electronic world and often embrace change and demand more from today’s educators.

This session will explore the nature of the “digital native” in the early years of education. Examples of blended courses from multiple disciplines at a private K-12 school will be showcased. As we explore these courses and the way students in the K-12 environment are using technology, we will examine implications for higher education.

Some courses to be examined will include AP Environmental Science, Chinese I-IV, Spanish, Survey of Modern Poetry and a unit on the stock market delivered in the 4th grade. All of these courses use WebCT to deliver and manage online components in a blended learning environment.

Participants will get a glimpse into the rapidly evolving nature of the K-12 student population as students participate in learner centered courses delivered in a blended format. Each example utilizes WebCT in unique ways while many incorporate other tools freely available to students and faculty alike.
