Podcasting? What the heck is that?
You have heard of blogs. You may have heard of wikis. Now there is podcasting. Podcasting in its most basic form is a way to place audio content on the web so that others may listen or even subscribe to your audio feeds. The material is varied such as presentations from workshops, keynote addresses, personal reflections, short stories and just about any thing else you can place in an audio file. Rather than using this space to teach how to create a podcast, I would like to introduce you to the world of podcasting and show you a simple, interactive way you can experience podcasting. I will provide detailed instructions for the "how to" in a future issue of Bits and Bytes. So, take a moment to explore the world of podcasting. Listen to one of the provided podcasts. Don't forget to leave your own audio message in the podcast sandbox provided for your personal experience.
Leave your own podcast and listen to it on the Internet.
Follow these simple instructions and leave a podcast in the sandbox using only your phone. To make this interesting and keep it in the theme of the year, let's share ways we can incorporate service learning in our respective disciplines and classes. Keep the messages short (1-2 minutes) and don't be afraid of sharing your ideas. The wisdom of the crowd is greater than the individual.

Now, think about how you might be able to use this in your classroom...
Just to start the ideas flowing, imagine the following…
- You teach poetry… contact a contemporary poet and invite them to use the posting information below to read one of their poems and provide a brief commentary related to the reading.
- You teach English…have your students use a phone to read in their voice, original poetry
- You teach government…contact a senator and invite them to share a brief (5 to 10 minute) lecture on how a bill is passed, branches of government etc.
- You teach history…invite your students to create a 2 to 3 minute radio spot in the style of NPR on the history of their family.
The possibilities are endless…

He travels the globe on the speaking circuit and blogs everywhere he goes. He is also one of the first in educational podcasting. Most of his posts relate to educational issues surrounding technology and the state of education in America and the rest of the world. He is very knowledgeable and is worth the read or in this case, a listen.
